Impulse is a community newsletter produced by the Northern California Society for Psychoanalytic Psychology (NCSPP) and distributed electronically to subscribers at no cost. We envision Impulse as an integrative source for local news, events, and thinking of interest to the psychoanalytically inclined. Our goal is to be your guide as you explore the Bay Area's rich array of analytic resources.

We invite you to become a member of NCSPP, if you are not already. And, we welcome you as a subscriber to Impulse. Join us as we highlight the exceptional diversity of psychoanalytic thought and practice in Northern California.

I hope your 2024 is off to a great start!

I want to start by thanking everyone who made it to the New Year party on February 2nd. It was wonderful to meet so many new people, hear about your interests and thriving practices, and connect on ideas for NCSPP’s future. The conversations were very energizing, so thank you. Also, I can’t not comment on how beautiful Ramsess Art Garden (plant heaven) was; I hope you all felt as well taken care of there as I did!

THE UNSEEN: BREAKING BARRIERS AND BUILDING BRIDGES:
COMMUNITY PSYCHOANALYSIS INTO THE FUTURE

Our presenters, Kimberlyn Leary, Francisco Gonzalez, Daniel Gaztambide, and Paula Kliger will be in conversation with each other and the audience. Preview a snapshot of their thoughts about community psychoanalysis by clicking this link.

The wars around the world, COVID-19 pandemic, climate crisis, displacement of refugees, economic and political turbulence, and racial injustices, challenge us to leverage our expertise, resources, and ethical responsibilities for the betterment of society.

DIGNITY

The woman lives on the same city corridor where I pass multiple times each week on the way to my spin gym. While her garb, physique, and hairstyle shift regularly, her facial expression remains lifeless and vacant. She paces up and down a two-block stretch, ostensibly with purpose and destination. The other day, I glanced over from my car window to see her urinating in the gutter. I feel devastated that she must squat in front of everybody to relieve herself. My heart sinks into despair for the unimaginable barbarity that absconded with her life. The horror…the horror… Because I have seen her so often, for so long, I can bear the tension of sensing and witnessing but not knowing her stories. I am mournful for the many whom I am unable to meet with the same spaciousness.
