THE PLAY OF EROS: THE STORY OF AN ADOLESCENT BOY
Most teens play video games. What happens when the virtual world becomes a space for growth and healing during a family rupture?
Bruce Reis, Ph.D., will present his work on Saturday, October 24th from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm with free lunch and social hour to follow at SFCP. Terrence Owens, Ph.D. will be the discussant.
Working with a pre-adolescent boy navigating his father’s departure, Dr. Reis explores how a multiplayer game wasn't just a retreat, but the treatment itself, a transitional space where a boy could imagine himself as "someone who could be the winner of a battle" and explore the contours of growth, autonomy, and body image.
This journey offers "a window into a world you and I do not live in" and reveals "what young teenage boys speak about amongst themselves, when they’re sure adults are not listening.”
