VIRTUAL MOVIE MATINEE
Thelma and Louise

Course Overview: 

Join the PLC, along with guest speakers Molly Merson, LMFT, and Stephanie King, Psy.D., for a discussion of the 1991 classic Thelma and Louise, starring Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon. Directed by Ridley Scott and written by Callie Khouri, this film follows the journey of two women defying patriarchal oppression and surviving in an unjust world. Attendees are asked to watch the film before the event, where our speakers will lead a discussion of the film’s themes through a psychoanalytic lens.

Presenters Response:

The selection of this film is an attempt to diversify the voices that are magnified by the PLC's events by focusing on the experiences of women interacting with the many manifestations of patriarchy, particularly during a specific time in American culture. Our speakers are excited to explore the influence of gender on the portrayal of friendship, sexuality, whiteness, and more.

Instructor(s): 

Stephanie King, Psy.D., is a cis, white psychologist working in private practice in Marin County, California.  She is a gender specialist, a sex and couples therapist and also works with adult daughters of narcissistic mothers.  Stephanie is the Past President of NCSPP and member of UCSF’s Mind the Gap.

Molly Merson, LMFT, is in independent practitioner working with adults and adolescents in psychoanalysis and talk therapy. Whether through writing, presentations, blogging, or in her work with patients, Molly interrogates whiteness and other systems of power and aims to incorporate decolonial approaches to healing. https://www.mollymerson.com/
