Impulse is a community newsletter produced by the Northern California Society for Psychoanalytic Psychology (NCSPP) and distributed electronically at no cost to subscribers. We envision Impulse as an integrative source for local news, events, and thinking of interest to the psychoanalytically inclined. Our goal is to be your guide as you explore the Bay Area's rich array of analytic resources.

We invite you to become a member of NCSPP, if you are not already. And, we welcome you as a subscriber to Impulse. Join us as we highlight the exceptional diversity of psychoanalytic thought and practice in Northern California.

by Shannon Dubach, PsyD

As the twenty-eighth president of NCSPP, I am struck by our rich history of dedication to sharing ideas, thoughts, and enthusiasm for psychoanalytically oriented theory and application. Twenty-eight years ago, a group of like-minded clinicians founded NCSPP in the spirit of inclusion and with a commitment to growing a professional home for Bay Area clinicians. Three years later, NCSPP founders and others established the Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California (PINC) as an institute providing full analytic training to mental health professionals of all disciplines.

We are pleased to announce that Alexandra Guhde, PsyD, has joined Impulse as a Potential Space feature writer. A licensed psychologist, she works analytically with couples and individuals, and with creative and athletic professionals who wish to focus on the processes underlying performance. In addition to her private practice in Rockridge, Dr. Guhde is director of Public Programs at the C. G. Jung Institute of San Francisco. Outside her clinical work, she enjoys devoting energy to her other creative pursuits, especially writing.

A POSSIBLE EXPERIENCE

"Any metaphor, beguiling as it may be, is a possible experience, and the difficulty lies not in its invention (a simple thing, attained by a mere shuffling of fancy words) but in achieving it in a way that astonishes its reader."
- Jorge Luis Borges, "A Profession of Literary Faith," 1926

by Ripple Patel

Patient, Therapist, and Personal Boundaries. A couple of psychoanalysts offer pithy responses to a recent article in the New York Times about patients Googling their shrinks.

Aggression, Not Just Depression, Led Copilot to Crash Plane. Experts struggle to understand the inner life of Andreas Lubitz, the copilot who crashed Germanwings flight 9525.

"Birdman": The Unexpected Virtue of Psychosis. Psychoanalyst Herbert H. Stein offers a more solemn interpretation of the Academy Award-winning film.
