Impulse is a community newsletter produced by the Northern California Society for Psychoanalytic Psychology (NCSPP) and distributed electronically at no cost to subscribers. We envision Impulse as an integrative source for local news, events, and thinking of interest to the psychoanalytically inclined. Our goal is to be your guide as you explore the Bay Area's rich array of analytic resources.

We invite you to become a member of NCSPP, if you are not already. And, we welcome you as a subscriber to Impulse. Join us as we highlight the exceptional diversity of psychoanalytic thought and practice in Northern California.

I am looking forward to our upcoming event on Saturday, March 10, titled “Psychoanalytic Babies: Toward a Relational-Developmental Psychoanalysis.” This promises to be an intriguing discussion, bringing together what remains vital in the classical psychoanalytic traditions with the emerging Intersubjectivist-Relational sensibility, including new findings in the areas of attachment, infant-parent interaction research, developmental neuroscience, trauma, and more. It will be held at SFCP from 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm. This event is an excellent reminder of the importance of a developmental foundation for clinical work across all age groups. Working with trauma, we often see adults regressing to preverbal states, and attachment disruptions arising throughout the therapeutic process. I look forward to seeing you there!

LACAN STUDY GROUP

We invite you to join our study group on Lacan, engaging with Lacan's consideration of issues that have direct relevance to our contemporary discussions: object relations, the mother, fetishism, identification, transitional objects.

In our second year, we are examining Lacan's concept of the object in its relation to transference and treatment. We will also look at how Lacan reads Freud and consider questions of how to read any text. No previous knowledge of Lacan is necessary.

THE DREAM TIME OF CONSTANTLY VARIED FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENTS

I like words. I like to sit and read, and listen, and talk, and imagine. As a child, I didn't walk until I was nearly two, but -- according to the family lore -- I talked in almost-sentences less than a year into life. And once I got going, I kept going. My favorite hobby was, and is still, to sit (mostly still) and read words.

In Ursula K. LeGuin's Words Are My Matter: Writing About Life and Books, she mentions "Dream Time," a place made of words, "...where human and animal are one." LeGuin is referring to the power of story and myth to connect us with our instincts. In that spirit, psychoanalysis is another wonderful place to find "Dream Time." There is so much life in a metaphor.

How Trump Trauma is Resurrecting the Jim Crow Era. Psychologist Theopia Jackson illustrates how African American and indigenous people and people of color are being retraumatized through the racism of the Trump administration and its supporters, and how the field of psychology and psychotherapy is navigating this terrain.

How Mid-Century Arab Thinkers Embraced the Ideas of Freud. Freud was first translated into Arabic in the 20th century, and from there, psychoanalysis found its way into Egyptian politics, the Egyptian military, social welfare, and even its courtrooms. The article concludes with a warning about the many uses of psychoanalysis: it can open one's mind to possibilities, as well as to close it in order to exert social control.

What We Talk About When We Talk About Israel. The author explores what gets evoked, for the author and others, during an exchange on a psychoanalytic listserv regarding the IARPP's decision to host its 2019 conference in Israel.
