Impulse is a community newsletter produced by the Northern California Society for Psychoanalytic Psychology (NCSPP) and distributed electronically at no cost to subscribers. We envision Impulse as an integrative source for local news, events, and thinking of interest to the psychoanalytically inclined. Our goal is to be your guide as you explore the Bay Area's rich array of analytic resources.

We invite you to become a member of NCSPP, if you are not already. And, we welcome you as a subscriber to Impulse. Join us as we highlight the exceptional diversity of psychoanalytic thought and practice in Northern California.

Two weeks ago marked the fifth anniversary of the outbreak of a brutal civil war in Syria. So far, an estimated nine million women, men, and children have been forced to flee their homes to seek refuge in the Middle East, Europe, and the United States. If "home is where we start from," as a T. S. Eliot line slightly adapted for the title of a collection of Winnicott's essays asserts, one shudders imagining the overwhelming challenges in the psychic trajectory of the millions of Syrian babies and children without a home--and those who are unable to leave home.

ILLUMINATING SAPIENCE

As Monteverdi's Vespers plays, the camera pans through a series of images: a serene, glistening lake view, St. Peter's Basilica and the sumptuous Roman skyline, close-ups of baroque architectural details, the streets of Paris, modern and grungy. This overture foreshadows an intrapsychic, interpersonal, existential exploration, a move from materialism to mysticism, a spiritual journey cracked open by the wisdom and beauty of a bygone time, and by the healing power of architectural spaces to provide a potential space for personal experience to take form.

Why Therapists Should Talk Politics. In this opinion piece, a clinician discusses the potentially iatrogenic impact of a myopic focus on individual psychology.

Saving Psychotherapy From the Medication Takeover. Allen Frances critiques the uneven playing field of drug and psychotherapy research.

Book Review: Scary Old Sex By Arlene Heyman. In this set of short stories, psychoanalyst Arlene Heyman writes unflinchingly about sexuality in senescence.
