Target Audience & Level: 

This group is open to staff members of county-funded or non-profit agencies and is designed to process clinical work by licensed or unlicensed employees.

Cancellation & Refund Policies: 

Enrollees who cancel at least SEVEN DAYS prior to the event date will receive a refund minus a $35 administrative charge. No refunds will be allowed after this time.  Transfer of registrations are not allowed.

Community Mental Health Committee

This committee is a group of clinicians who are interested in the relationship between Community Mental Health (CMH) and psychoanalysis.  Psychoanalysis is anchored in a quality of close care and attention that is often systematically denied to members of disadvantaged communities and difficult to locate in stressed, under-resourced public mental health clinics.  CMH clinicians hold the tension between a variety of institutional, social, and political pressures and constraints. Meanwhile, psychoanalytic thinking sometimes misses the significance of these systemic influences on individual lives.

There is important work to be done in bridging the theoretical and concrete gaps between community work and psychoanalytic practice. The CMH committee aspires to create a more inclusive home for CMH clinicians within the NCSPP community. In turn, we advocate for greater investment from psychoanalysis in the projects of CMH practitioners- in terms of both theory and practical engagement.

We seek to identify the needs and interests of our various partners both in CMH and NCSPP.  We invite our community members to engage with us by emailing us.

Supervisory Consultation Group 
for CMH Clinicians

Course Overview: 

The frenetic pace of agency work in community mental health makes finding time and space to think deeply about our work difficult. With the pressures of documentation requirements, community trauma, and limited resources, these demands overshadow clinical thinking. In response to the needs of our community, NCSPP is providing an additional forum to reflect on our clinical work.

This consultation group will support CMH agency supervisors through processing and reflecting on their supervisory relationships. It will be led by seasoned clinicians who have experience in community settings. The groups will meet approximately every other week, and be held at the consultants offices, all located in San Francisco.

Instructor(s): 

Loong Kwok, Psy.D., is the Director of Child Services at Access Institute, where he teaches and supervises school-based therapy. He works with adults, children, and couples at Baywell Psychiatry Group. He also serves on the Editorial Committee of fort da, NCSPP’s journal, and the Neuropsychoanalysis Committee of PINC.

Stephen Lugar, Psy.D., is a clinical psychologist who works with adults, adolescents, and children in San Francisco. He worked for many years in community mental health at RAMS, Inc. in its outpatient, school-based, and residential programs and has also supervised and taught at both RAMS and Access Institute. Dr. Lugar is currently a candidate in psychoanalytic training at PINC.
