Dr. Salman Akhtar will discuss the chronic mental pain, or, in Freud’s (1926) terms, seelenschmerz, that minority group members often experience. According to Dr. Akhtar, this pain is generated by the dissonance between individual subjectivity and the stereotypes that the larger sociocultural "holding environment” imposes. Through clinical intervention and collaborative civic engagement, Dr. Akhtar will illuminate ways to address and reconcile aspects of this discord.
