Course Overview

At the center of the training on supervision is the inter-relationship between the supervisor and the supervisee, an intern, or a trainee. The supervisee also adds to this mix the patients who are in treatment, thus bringing in a third presence that permeates the relationship between these two. In addition to the basic frame of supervision, this course introduces the many vertices of the interpersonal matrix involving the supervisee/patient couple and the supervisor/supervisee couple. The class is experiential and process oriented, attuned to the relational needs for supervising group members.

Course Objectives
  • Participants will be able to delineate the basic requirements of the role of supervisor.
  • Participants will be able to explain the theoretical perspectives of "relational supervision".
  • Participants will be able to illustrate and discuss the interconnections involved in the triad of supervisor, supervisee and patient.
  • Participants will be able to demonstrate the various vertices of relational supervision with narrative examples.
  • Participants will be able to summarize and discuss the impact of listening to the case material of the supervisee on the supervisor.
  • Participants will be able to elicit for discussion specific issues that have arisen for them during the course.
