Course Overview

In this six-week course we will explore the impact of early trauma. We will focus on the contribution of object relations theory to the understanding of trauma and its treatment. Among the topics we will discuss are infantile traumatic experience, après-coup, traumatic memory, dissociation and emotional dysregulation in trauma, absence and the lack of representability in traumatic experiences, and the transgenerational transmission of trauma. We will also discuss the emotional impact traumatized patients have on the therapist. We will read selected papers from Freud, Ferenczi, Fairbairn, Winnicott, Cesar & Sara Botella, and Dori Laub..

Course Objectives
  • Participants will be able to describe the "the return of the bad object" (Fairbairn) in the treatment of traumatized patients and identify this process in their own clinical work.
  • Participants will be able to describe the "fear of breakdown" (Winnicott) and its management in the treatment of patients who experienced early trauma.
  • Participants will be able to describe and identify the absence and the lack of representability in traumatic experiences (Freud, Ferenczi, Fairbairn, Winnicott, Cesar & Sara Botella and Dori Laub).
