Contemporary Perspectives on Trauma

We will focus on the contribution of object relations theory to the understanding of trauma and its treatment. Among the topics we will discuss are infantile traumatic experience, après-coup, traumatic memory, dissociation and emotional dysregulation in trauma, absence and the lack of representability in traumatic experiences, and the transgenerational transmission of trauma. We will also discuss the emotional impact traumatized patients have on the therapist. We will read selected papers from Freud, Ferenczi, Fairbairn, Winnicott, Cesar & Sara Botella, and Dori Laub.. Course Objectives
Era Loewenstein, Ph.D., is an adult, child, and adolescent psychoanalyst and psychotherapist. A past president of NCSPP, Dr. Lowenstein is a training and supervising analyst at the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis (SFCP) and she was an associate board member of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis. At SFCP she serves on the faculty of the adult and child analytic programs and Extension division. Dr. Loewenstein presents frequently in local and national venues on issues relating to trauma, perversion, primitive states, the capacity to dream, creativity, and child analysis and psychoanalytic consultation in preschools.
