The Mutative Capacity of Play in Latency

Course Overview

We will explore how play takes form and can elaborate, express, or hinder growth for children during the Latency period (ages five through puberty). Through close reading of clinical process with a boy and a girl, we will discuss how play and the therapeutic relationship can offer children the opportunity to reach their developmental potentials more fully.

Course Objectives
  • Participants will be able to identify 3 theoretical interpretations of play.
  • Participants will be able to describe affective, symbolic & structural aspects of play.
  • Participants will be able to describe play for the Latency-aged child.
  • Participants will be able to differentiate three theoretical perspectives on play.
  • Participants will be able to describe the developmental stage of Latency and the associated states and traits through case material.
  • Participants will be able to identify mutative, or pivotal moments in play.
About Dr. Schneider
Celeste Schneider, Ph.D., is an advanced child and adult analytic candidate and associate faculty at the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis (SFCP) and in private clinical practice in Oakland and at the Masonic Center for Youth and Families in San Francisco. Recent publications include ?Discovering New Ways of Seeing and Speaking about Psychotherapy Process: The Child Psychotherapy Q-Set? (2009, Routledge Press), and ?A ?Motion Portrait? of a Psychodynamic Treatment of an 11-Year-Old Girl: Exploring Interrelations of Psychotherapy Process and Outcome Using the Child Psychotherapy Q-Set? (2011, Journal of Infant Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy).

Cancellation & Refund Policies
Enrollees who cancel at least SEVEN DAY prior to the event date will receive a refund minus a $35 administrative charge. No refunds will be allowed after this time.

THERE WILL BE A $25 BANK CHARGE AND AN ADDITIONAL $15 ADMINISTRATIVE CHARGE ON ALL RETURNED CHECKS.

CE Credit
This event meets the requirements for 6 CE credits for LCSWs, MFTs, and Psychologists. Participants must attend 100% of the program. Upon completion of a conference evaluation form, a CE Certificate will be issued. This serves as documentation of attendance for all participants.
LCSWs/MFTs: This event meets the requirements for CE credits for LCSWs and MFTs through the BBS (Provider #PCE 508).
Psychologists: Division 39 is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Division 39 maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

Target Audience & Instructional Level
This course is open to all NCSPP members and interested early career clinicians who work with childrenn. This program is intended for those with an intermediate level of knowledge and experience.
