Course Overview
Digital technology is moving at lightning speed. Psychoanalytic treatment is based on the age-old schema of physical presence. How do the clinicians who were trained before these technological advances think about staying current in a world that requires more and more digital fora? From the expectation that the “legitimate” therapist can be found through web sites and google searches, to patient requests to use credit cards and email as basic forms of exchange, the communication tide has changed in the clinical encounter. How do we keep up, should we try to keep up, and what do these sea changes mean for treatment? Younger clinicians now grow up as “digital natives.” Do these new forms of digital “contact” impact their ideas of intimacy and psychoanalytic work? Moderated by local analyst Gary Grossman, this Scientific Meeting will include a Skpye session with psychoanalyst Dr. Gillian Isaacs Russel, who serves on the Board of the China American Psychoanalytic Alliance and is Chair of Supervision for their training. In addition, Dr. Leslie Carr will present case material in which digital technologies are a prominent feature. The day promises to be lively and compelling.

Course Objectives
  • Participants will be able to describe the technological advances that impact current psychotherapy. They will be able to compare these advances with modes of communication between therapist and patient/client in past 50 years.
  • Participants will be able to discuss the numerous modes of contact available to people in the 21st century and analyze the pros and cons of the increasing modes of remote communication. They will be able to explain how these modes of communication impact intimacy between people.
  • Participants will be able to assess the pros and cons of incorporating these technological advances into psychotherapy communications, i.e.: emailing between patient and therapist, web searches for information, Skype sessions, texting, etc.
  • Participants will be able to identify the ethical implications of broadening therapist-patient communications. Identify the issues of confidentiality inherent to multi-modal/digital communications.
  • Participants will be able to critique the work of a clinician using digital methods in psychotherapy, applying the afore-mentioned considerations of the efficacy of treatment and the ethical, interactive, and qualitative differences between live and internet-based psychotherapy.
