If I ever go looking for my heart’s desire again,
I won’t look any further than my own backyard.

— Dorothy, The Wizard of Oz

The Bay Area is home to some of the most creative, prolific, and respected analytic thinkers in the country. Among them are Tom Ogden, Peter Goldberg, Alice Jones, and Sam Gerson, all of whom vividly bring to life in their clinical and creative writing the crosscurrents and undertows of the mind and consulting room. Yet, Bay Area clinicians can sometimes be like residents of a city who are so busy exploring faraway lands that they never pause to investigate the treasures in their own backyards. This class will provide an overview of major ideas by some of our local psychoanalytic literary luminaries, emphasizing their unique clinical and theoretical contributions to our collective understanding.

Course Objectives
  • Participants will discuss the major clinical and theoretical contributions of four important Bay Area psychoanalytic writers and develop an appreciation of their clinical and theoretical contributions.
  • Participants will understand what Tom Ogden means by “dreaming” experience in the clinical encounter, and learn about his latest ideas on working clinically with “interrupted cries.”
  • Participants will gain an understanding of Sam Gerson’s ideas about the “relational unconscious” and working with the “dead third.”
  • Participants will develop an appreciation of the use of language in the clinical encounter through Alice Jones’ writing on poetry and psychoanalysis.
  • Participants will gain an understanding of Peter Goldberg’s ideas on dissociation and the “somatic false self.”
