Course Overview Bion’s description of the “sigma realm” is a concept that has received little attention from scholars but is at the core of Bion’s mature theory of thinking. This course will discuss the sigma realm as the domain of ultimate reality, where the analyst’s intuition is realized. Understanding the concept of the sigma realm can lead to a deeper awareness of the role of intuition in the analyst’s mind and its importance in working with deeply disturbed and destructive states of mind in patients who are often considered unreachable or untreatable. A successful container-contained relationship can emerge from interpretations made from the sigma realm. Course Objectives
