Course Overview
In this course, we will explore how we use our emotional responses to our patients to foster growth in analytic work. How does the therapist identify and then make use of his/her emotional responses within an analytic therapy hour? Under what conditions does the therapist hold his/her reaction silently? Under what conditions does the therapist say something to the patient about his/her emotional response? If we elect to say something, how do we formulate what and how we say it?

We will begin by reviewing some of C.G. Jung's statements about the intersubjective nature of analytic work and follow with a close reading of Ogden's Reading Harold Searles and some excerpts from Searles’ published work. In an effort to bring forward the experience of the analytic patient, we will follow with a discussion of a 2007 article in the Journal of Analytical Psychology by an analysand about his two analyses, the first gone awry followed by one that was reparative. We will also read a companion piece by this analysand's last analyst about his work with this particular analysand. We will conclude with a discussion of clinical material presented by the seminar leader.

Course Objectives
  • Participants will be able to more easily identify their emotional responses to their patients through case examples presented in the seminar and discussion of those examples.
  • Participants will have an opportunity to think more systematically about the kinds of choices they have available to them when they are feeling strongly about a psychotherapy client. In doing so, they will improve their capacity to deal with conflict in the clinical situation and to use it productively.
  • Participants will have an opportunity to think critically about the theory of transference/countertransference and the questions about the therapist's use of "neutrality" as opposed to "engagement" as an analytic tool.
