Francis Grier has written extensively about psychoanalytic theory and couple psychotherapy and is the editor of Brief Encounters with Couples: Some Analytic Perspectives and Oedipus and the Couple. Dr. Grier will focus on couples with an extreme paranoid-schizoid frame of mind, bordering on psychotic functioning. Within this frame work, he will describe the formation of this type of couple’s ideals and the betrayal of those ideals as well as how the couple’s experience of time affects their psychological functioning. Dr. Grier will present clinical material highlighting differences in working with couples with an anti-developmental, near-psychotic level of functioning versus those who use their psychotherapy to develop healthier relationships. Following Francis Grier’s thought-provoking presentation, Julie Friend, LCSW, will discuss Dr. Grier's paper followed by a case presentation by Dr. Leora Benioff to Dr. Grier. Course Objectives
