Program Overview
Clinical Field Theory (CFT) is a contemporary psychoanalytic approach that synthesizes insights from neuroscience, attachment, and object relations research into simple but powerful revision of technique. Neuroscience's discovery of the Mirror Neuron System is transforming our understanding of the biological basis of empathy, unconscious communication, transference, and projective identification. Attachment research is demonstrating how attachments throughout the life span directly impact brain structure and function. Object Relations Theory - in particular the work of Bion/Ferro - is suggesting that the analyst's capacity to register and transform the patient's raw emotion into empathically resonant narrative promotes the patient's growth and skill building. While keeping key theoretical ideas in mind, we will focus on simple but powerful technical principles that facilitate an analytic process, regardless of frequency and setting.

Course Objectives
  • Participants will explore and understand a set of emerging ideas that, when taken together, comprise the basic elements of CFT.
  • Participants will discuss simple technical principles that will increase capacity to transform deep emotional experiences and facilitate an analytic process, regardless of frequency or setting (couch vs. chair).
