Course Outline
Presentation: Toni Heineman: A Dyadic Approach to Treating Foster Children
Case Presentation: Pre-licensed Clinician, TBA
Case Discussion: Michael Axelman

Program Overview
This course will investigate a dyadic parent-child treatment approach in treating children in the foster care system. Attention will be given to the role of attachment disruption, exposure to domestic violence, experience of either physical or emotional abuse or neglect, and lack of placement constancy as challenges to both weekly psychotherapy of children in the foster care system and collateral work with birth and foster family systems. Evaluations will be made as to which circumstances would warrant moving from an individual to a parent-child model of psychotherapy with children in foster care, particularly those who have a history of trauma or significant attachment disruptions or disorders.

Course Objectives
  • This course will describe a long-term, dyadic parent-child treatment approach in treating children in the foster care system.
  • This course will analyze case material involving the treatment of a foster child by an intern.
  • This course will apply psychoanalytic thinking to early exposure to domestic violence, physical abuse, neglect, attachment disruption, and lack of placement consistency.
