Program Overview
Marion Milner's work is seminal, elaborating or even anticipating many of Winnicott’s core concepts, yet she is often relegated to the sidelines. A creative spirit, Milner, like Freud, discovered psychoanalysis through personal inquiry. Her method was deep observation: of herself, her perceptions, the objects in the world around her, and her patients. In this class we offer an introduction to Milner’s fascinating and useful work. We will read widely from her diaries and her more scholarly papers while actively exploring the spirit of observation she championed through our own experiential inquiry—using art, music, and writing, as well as critical reading and clinical presentation.

Course Objectives
  • Participants will become familiar with the trajectory of Marion Milner's writings, from her early diaries to her later theoretical and clinical papers.
  • Participants will understand Marion Milner's use of creative exercises, namely drawing and painting, as a means of constructing models of various key psychoanalytic concepts of unconscious processes.
  • Participants will be able to apply Marion Milner's ideas about "the role of illusion in symbol formation" to develop creative interpretive techniques in clinical encounters.
