Course Overview
As the field of psychoanalytic psychotherapy has evolved in the direction of treating more primitive anxieties, therapists are being challenged to develop new methods of interpretation. Additionally, working with patients in the throes of primitive anxieties frequently triggers unsettling reactions/anxieties in clinicians, making it harder to think. Building upon ideas developed by Bick, Winnicott, Bion, Ogden, and others, as well as discussion of clinical material provided by the instructor and class members, this five-week seminar will focus on helping therapists more effectively expand their interpretation skills and contain their own countertransference reactions.

Course Objectives
  • Participants will be able to assess the patient’s level of mental functioning as it fluctuates between the 3 levels of unconscious experience from moment to moment in the therapy and construct interpretations accordingly.
  • Participants will be able to apply theoretical concepts like Bick’s notion of “psychic skin” and Bion’s “theory of thinking” to understand the nature of primitive anxieties and some of the processes that are needed to further integration of the psyche-soma.
  • Participants will develop techniques of interpretations that deepen the treatment process, enhance the patient’s feeling of being understood, and promote the development of the therapeutic relationship.
