Program Overview Loss of income, financial stress, pregnancy and births, health issues, deaths, marriage, divorce or family demands leave us at times vulnerable to fantasies of professional omnipotence or masochistic tendencies to "heal the wounded" when we actually are at our own limits, but feel we should give more. This may be enacted in our fee structure, schedule, and time away from what nurtures and feeds us to do our sometimes very difficult work. Transference and countertransference dynamics also potentially cloud our ability to sometimes see the obvious: our humanity. This course explores our limitations and gifts, questions of competency and how we bear doing our work while seeking to play, thrive and keep our minds. When may we feel we have done enough or too much? How do we metabolize these questions and seek consultation or support? We may have shame or guilt about needing our own support in a profession that asks a lot from us but sometimes leaves us not knowing when or how to seek consultation. We study and read about helping our patients. How do we think about a potential space that allows us to help ourselves and colleagues we know and care about within our community? We will explore this complex terrain with readings and clinical material. Course Objectives
