Event Description
Curiosity is an active attitude of openness toward one’s own experience, a willingness—so thorough that it transcends conscious intentionality—to allow our many “feelings of tendency” to fulfill themselves in formulated experience. Any compromise of curiosity is some variety of dissociation. Curiosity and dissociation are reciprocals of one another, two ends of a continuum. During the unconscious mutual enactments that Interpersonal and Relational analysts expect to encounter in every treatment, each participant responds to the other “singlemindedly”—that is, from within a single dissociated self-state. The resolution of an enactment entails the breach of the mutual dissociation and a regained capacity to be curious— about the other, but also about oneself. The result is an expansion of the self, the inclusion of some portion of what had been the unsymbolized, unformulated “not-me” within the part of subjectivity that is identified as “me.” This aspect of therapeutic action depends on the development of a new perception of the other, which stimulates new perceptions of oneself as well.

We will discuss enactment as the interpersonalization of dissociation and as unformulated experience. The significance of “witnessing” in the analytic process will be explored, and we will see how dissociation and enactment interrupts the process of witnessing. Witnessing goes on continuously between the parts of one’s own self as well as between the patient and the analyst. Dissociation and enactment interrupt both.

Course Objectives
  • To be able to define dissociation and unformulated experience, and to be able to identify and work with the phenomena described by these concepts in the clinical situation. What is the relevance of the concept of self-state?
  • To be able to define unconscious mutual enactment and understand its relation to dissociation. To understand the clinical use of the phenomena to which these concepts refer.
  • To be able to define curiosity and its relation to enactment and dissociation. To understand the clinical use of all three concepts in relation to one another.
About Dr. Stern
Donnel B. Stern, Ph.D., is the author of Partners in Thought: Working with Unformulated Experience, Dissociation, and Enactment (Routledge, 2009), Unformulated Experience: From Dissociation to Imagination in Psychoanalysis (The Analytic Press, 1997), and dozens of journal articles published over three decades. He is the editor of the Psychoanalysis in a New Key Book Series (Routledge), a former editor of Contemporary Psychoanalysis, and a current editorial board member of Psychoanalytic Dialogues, Psychoanalytic Inquiry, Psychoanalytic Psychology, and the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association. In 2005, he received the first biannual Award for Lifetime Achievement presented by Section V: Psychologist-Psychoanalyst Practitioners of Division 39 (Division of Psychoanalysis) of the American Psychological Association. Dr. Stern is a training and supervising analyst and faculty member at the William Alanson White Institute, a supervisor and faculty member at the New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, and on the board of directors of the International Association for Relational Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy (IARPP). He is in private practice in Manhattan.

CE Credit
6 CE credits will be awarded for this course.

For any course held over multiple weeks participants must attend 80% of the program in order to receive CE credit. Upon completion of a conference evaluation form, a certificate will be issued. This serves as documentation of attendance for all participants. LCSWs/MFTs: These courses meet the requirements for CE credits for LCSWs and MFTs through the BBS. (Provider #PCE 508). Psychologists: Division 39 is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Division 39 maintains responsibility for these programs and their content.

Target Audience & Instructional Level
All licensed mental health professionals, residents, interns, and graduate students in training, as well as members of the lay public who have an interest in psychoanalytic psychology. This is an intermediate level course.

Cancellation & Refund Policies
Enrollees who cancel at least seven days prior to the workshop date or the first class of a course with multiple meetings will receive a refund minus a $35 administrative charge. No refunds will be allowed after this time.

THERE WILL BE A $25 BANK CHARGE AND AN ADDITIONAL $15 ADMINISTRATIVE CHARGE ON ALL RETURNED CHECKS.
