THE ECONOMIC CRISIS AND THE IMPACT ON TREATMENT:

Date: Saturday, May 15, 2010 - new date
Location: San Francisco, TBA
Time: 12:30 p.m. 4:00 p.m.

Course Description
The economic crisis is having far reaching consequences for the practice of psychotherapy in our community. Psychotherapists have the difficult task of trying to care for their patients and themselves within the context of increasing economic pressures, which in turn challenges some of the fundamental structures of our profession. In this half-day panel discussion, we will explore and discuss ways that psychotherapists can respond more effectively to the emotional and economic strain these situations place on our clinical capacities. Aspects of both the clinical and social pressures that underlie these experiences will be discussed. Clinically, we will focus on common countertransference responses to economic hardship in our patients lives. These situations often leave the clinician feeling helpless and frightened in ways that inhibit his or her clinical effectiveness and resourcefulness. The panel will use case examples and theory to illustrate these and other issues which emerge. The panel also will address a number of broader social issues and conflicts that similarly impact our current clinical experience.

Course Objectives
  • Participants will be able to describe common clinical challenges created by the potential loss patients due to job and economic loss.
  • Participants will be able to discuss the short and long term challenges faced by patients who have lost work or been downsized.
  • Participants will be able to discuss ways to think about balancing their own economic need along with those of their patients.
  • Participants will be able to think about various responses our therapeutic community can have to the economic challenges we are facing.
  • Participants will be able to describe how to balance our clinical interest in psychic reality with our patients needs for our empathy and validation of their external challenges
