Course Description
Medical treatment of infertility brings numerous complications to the psychological processes associated with conception, gestation, birth and the transition to parenthood. Along with issues for each partner there are also complications for the couple itself; as each partner copes with losses and anxieties, the couple must find a way to rebalance itself and to mourn the loss of its biological creative capacity so as to find its psychological creative capacity. In concrete ways the couple is faced with evidence of its inability to create, and thus its inadequacy as a creative couple, and this may lead to processes of retribution and/or hopelessness and despair. The couple must find a way to mourn the loss of their fantasized and idealized naturally-born child, while at the same time holding open the potential for a different mode of creativity. This panel will focus upon these issues at the level of the couple as well as implications for psychoanalytic treatment, mourning and reparation. Other issues considered will include the basics of reproductive technology, the experience of medical technology for conception, and how sexual desire is affected. We will address the necessity and limitations of the concrete aspects of medical and infertility treatment and how these influence both individual and couple psychologies.

Course Objectives
  • Participants will be able to analyze the significance of assisted reproductive technology in terms of the impact it has on their patients' relationships, self image, and view of the world.
  • Participants will be able to define meaningful differences between the experiences of heterosexual and same sex couples in the journey to conceive
  • Participant will be able to demonstrate sensitive and nuanced language that addresses class and other socio-economic differences among patients undergoing assisted reproductive technology.
  • Participants will be able to address complex emotional factors that affect their patients undergoing assisted reproductive technology such as sexual desire, unconscious processes, mourning and reparation in the therapy

Fees:
* Registration for this event for NCSPP Members is free during early registration. Early registration will remain open through March 12, 2010. After this date an additional $15 will be added to all registrations.
