Winter Salon - Peninsula/South Bay: DISSECTING A BUTTERFLY: An Analysis of Character in PUccini's Madama Butterfly Presenter: Kenneth Pound, Psy.D. Location: Private Home, Los Altos Date: Friday, February 5, 2010 Time: 7:30 p.m. Fees: $20 - $25 Salon Description Opera is an art form known for being highly emotionally charged and often assumed to be dramatically naive. This perception, however, misses the abstraction in opera and the often complex characters and themes therein. Just as it is possible to know a patient through the abstracting structure of psychotherapy, it is possible to know an operatic character through the synthesis of art forms that comprise opera. Identification is crucial to the endeavor. Dr. Pound will demonstrate this in a musical salon talk exploring Puccinischaracter Madame Butterfly. Butterfly will be shown to be fascinatingly complex, enigmatic, and likeable while at the same time quite possibly pathological. She is both a victim and something of an emotional vampire. About Dr. Pound Kenneth Pound, Psy.D., is a candidate in psychoanalytic training at Columbia University in New York City. He is a former board member and secretary of NCSPP, a former director of doctoral studies at the Community Institute for Psychotherapy, and a former adjunct faculty member at The Wright Institute and New College of California. He currently is in private practice in Manhattan working psychoanalytically with individual adults, adolescents, and couples.
