THE WOODSMAN (2004)

Exploring Empathy:
When Victim Becomes Perpetrator

Discussant: Reyna Cowan, LCSW
Location: The Variety Preview Room, 582 Market Street, San Francisco
Date: Friday, February 19, 2010
Time: 6:00 p.m. 9:00 p.m.
Fees: $8 pre-registration; $12 at the door.

Event Description
The Woodsman, a 2004 film directed by Nicole Kassell, features Kevin Bacon playing Walter, a convicted sex-offender who returns home after twelve years in prison. As Walter struggles to adjust to contempt from his community and isolation from his former friends and family, the viewer witnesses his attempt to avoid temptation and become normal. The film raises deeply conflicting emotions in its viewers as it waivers between pulling for empathy and leaving the audience disgusted with Walter's actions. Clinicians of all levels will gather to view and discuss this thought-provoking film, as a psychoanalytically-oriented clinician, Reyna Cowan, LCSW, facilitates the post-viewing conversation. All are welcome at this event, including current NCSPP members, prospective members, friends, partners, and colleagues. Wine and hors d'oeuvres will be provided.
