Seminar Series: THE GENERATIVE AND DESTRUCTIVE ASPECTS OF AGGRESSION IN ADOLESCENT DEVELOPMENT SEMINAR I: THE BODY IN ADOLESCENCE: Sexuality, Identity, Attachment, and the Origins of Self-Destructive Acts Instructor: Brian Feldman, Ph.D. CE: 3 CE Credits Location: Center for Healthy Development, 100 N. Winchester Blvd. Santa Clara Date: Saturday, February 13, 2010 Time: 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Fees: $30 - $160* Course Description This seminar will focus on the origins of self-destructive behavior in adolescence. We will consider infant observation material as a way of understanding the evolution of body image, psychic skin, attachment, and the self within the intersubjective context of the infant/caregiver relationship. We will link infant observation material to the development of eating disorders, sexual addictions, cutting behavior, and other self- destructive behavior in adolescence. The concepts of the primary and secondary psychic skin functions will be elaborated as a way of understanding difficulties in symbolization and containment capacities. These difficulties can lead to the self-destructive behaviors that are an expression of a disruption in the ability to manage difficult experiences. Clinical material from adolescent analyses will be presented to demonstrate the usefulness of the theoretical concepts. Course Objectives
