Student Paper Presentation:
The Peculiar Case History:
Finding Purloined Meaning in Subjective Texts

Presentation Overview
Peculiarities of the psychoanalytic case history sit so fully in view that they often escape notice. This talk will address how the problematic idiosyncratic features of case histories - disguise, consent, ratiocination, authorial authority, transference curiosity, countertransferential enactments, and the limits of language - function and differentiate case histories from other genres of writing. As a result of these peculiarities, we will explore the ways in which case histories do not represent objective "real world" information, but are rather composed of multiple inherently subjective levels that are valuable in their own right. This talk will posit that the value of case histories lies precisely in the subjectivity of the work, which must be addressed in both its composition and reception.

Course Objectives
  • Participants will be able to contrast distinguish the different aspects of clinical case histories as compared to other genres of writing.
  • Participants will be able to analyze the use and function of disguise, consent, ratiocination, authorial authority, transference curiosity, etc in case histories.
  • Participants will learn to apply Tom Ogden's idea of "The Analytic Third," to understand the value of subjectivity in case history writing.
  • Participants will be able to critically examine their own personal style of writing and applying case histories in their clinical practice.
