Course Overview
This course will focus on the interplay between theory, clinical technique, countertransference, and the inevitable, unplanned actions of therapist and child when one is engaged in psychotherapy. We will be looking at how to think about and how to manage toileting accidents, children who refuse to come into the office (and refuse to leave), lying, cheating, and stealing from us. How do we work with and contain adolescents who text their myriad of friends in sessions? How do we keep the therapist and child safe in the face of physical rage and fury, guaranteeing both will survive? Participants' clinical cases and quandaries will be a welcomed aspect of this course.

Course Objectives
  • Learn to intervene with atypical problems in the consulting room.
  • Manage strong countertransference reactions.
  • Define play patterns along developmental norms.
