Course Overview In this three week class, we will study the perverse structure and examine the use of sexualization, sadism, and excitement in order to ward off psychotic and neurotic anxieties. We will consider the ways in which the perverse patient attempts to corrupt the analytic task, and how this is manifested in the transference and counter-transference relationship. We will discuss technical approaches to working effectively with the problem of perversion. Two papers will be explored in detail: Betty Joseph, (1971), A clinical contribution to the analysis of a perversion, and Tom Ogden, (1996), The perverse subject of analysis. Course Objectives
