Course Overview This class will be an exploration of the work of Henri Rey. We will begin by placing Rey's work in a historical context of Freud and Klein's contribution to the concepts of care and manic repair of damaged internal objects. From Freud's paper Mourning and Melancholia, to Klein's focus on the need to contend with early sadism toward objects, we will look at how the inability to sustain the growth of the good object at critical moments in a child's development can lead to a powerful retreat into a phantasy of living inside the mother. Rey's work focuses on what existence is like within this distorted internal world. His ideas of claustro/agoraphobia have proven to be an extremely helpful conception which both allows us to see deeply into the structures underlying this world and orients us toward effective treatment. Rey extended Klein's conceptions of manic reparation by placing those responses to early depressive anxiety within the phantasy of life within the mother. From there, Rey helps us see how these omnipotent efforts to repair the mother leads to further collapse of a developing self structure and the loss of the possibility for normal development. This class will provide a working understanding of the claustro/agoraphobic matrix, omnipotent reparation and other hindrances to the development of normal self space. Through clinical example, both from Rey's text and the teacher's cases, we will see how these conceptions are translated into clinical application. Course Objectives
