Course Overview
In Promises, Promises (2001) Adam Phillips writes, "I think that reading what used to be called Literature is probably a better preparation for the practice of psychoanalysis than the reading of anything else…" Indeed, starting with Freud, who noted that his case histories read like novellas and peppered other writings with quotes from his favorite authors, the most creative thinkers in psychoanalysis have found inspiration in great fiction and poetry. Contemporary mental health training programs, however, rarely include the study of literature in their curricula. In an effort to address this gap this course will offer participants the opportunity to closely read several great novels and poems with an instructor who is both a professor of literature and a practicing psychoanalyst. Primarily exploring the ways these works of art illuminate the human condition on their own terms, versus the how they exemplify psychoanalytic concepts, our aim will be to enrich how we imagine, conceptualize and listen to the universal and unique in our patient's lives, as well as our own. Works to be read include Melville's Moby Dick, Conrad's Heart of Darkness, Faulkner's The Sound and The Fury, Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises, and Mann's Death in Venice as well as poetry by Eliot, Plath, and Lowell.

Course Objectives
  • Analyze, critique and compare the depiction of individual psychology in great works of literature and poetry.
  • Analyze and discuss the relationship between aesthetics and unconscious mental functioning in great works of literature and poetry.
  • Discuss the relevance of literary aesthetics, poetics and representations of individual psychology for psychodynamic clinical work.
