Program Overview This workshop will discuss the psychological states that can precipitate or exacerbate illness. These states include anxiety, depression, hostility, child abuse, and low socioeconomic status. Technical implications of the above will be discussed. In order to work psychoanalytically with medical patients, it is crucial that therapists provide an opportunity for patients to talk about concrete (bodily) aspects of illness. Such discussions provide a window for patients to access symbolic and emotional responses which are often truncated as a result of medical illness. The presence of medical problems in patients often causes anxiety in those of us who practice psychoanalytically. Countertransference responses in therapists will be discussed as well as the general western medicine model. Case examples will be used to illustrate theoretical points and attendees are encouraged to bring their own case material for discussion. Tamara McClintock Greenberg, Psy.D., MS is a psychoanalytic psychologist in private practice in San Francisco. She is on the faculty of the Access Institute, the McAuley Institute, and UCSF Medical School and Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute. She is the author of The Psychological Impact of Acute and Chronic Illness (Springer, 2007) and an author of the chapter Meaning and Illness in the forthcoming Praeger publication, Mind-Body Medicine: The Art of Healthcare. Class Size and Eligibility for Enrollment Course size for multiple week seminars is limited to approximately 15 participants. Class minimums will be 6 to 8 participants. For information regarding eligibility and availability, please email us for an application. Continuing Education Credit These courses meet the requirements for CE credits for MFTs and LCSWs (BBS Provider Number: PCE508). CE credits will be given to psychologists through Division 39 upon completion of the course. (The number of CE credits is equal to the number of hours listed for each course.) Division 39 is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Division 39 maintains responsibility for the program and its content. In order to receive CE credit for any course held over multiple weeks, 80% attendance is required at any given course segment. For some courses, attendance at all sessions may be required for CE credit. See www.ncspp.org for expanded course summaries and updated course information.
