Program Overview "I want to work with children but I can't deal with the parents" is a phrase echoed by many child clinicians. This class will present a model for clinical work with parents in conjunction with their child's treatment. Class material will focus on: Why are parents hesitant to initiate treatment for their troubled child. What are the developmental issues of parenthood? Why do parents experience narcissistic injuries when their child begins to have problems? What are the various counter transferences therapists experience while working within the parent/child matrix? Course Objectives: 1) Identify reasons parents avoid seeking mental health consultations for their children's problems. Discuss interventions to assist parents with their objections. 2) Address therapists' countertransference wishes to be the better mother/parent to their child patients. 3) Review ways to help parents see their work with the therapist as an opportunity to learn about the normal developmental phase of parenthood. Specifically, to clarify the parents' identification with their child, deal with narcissistic injury when the child has problems, and begin to tolerate the child's separate identity as it gradually emerges. Target Audience: Licensed mental health professionals who treat children in their clinical practice Cancellation Enrollees who cancel at least seven days prior to the workshop date or the first class of a course with multiple meetings will receive a refund minus a $25 administrative charge. No refunds will be allowed after this time. Returned Checks There will be a $25 bank charge and an additional $15 administrative charge on all returned checks.
