Program Overview
The consulting room has often been conceptualized as a world apart, hermetically protected from the exigencies of “external reality” in order to allow the inner world to flower. This class challenges this notion, arguing that in order to work effectively with the cultural dimension of the treatment we must conceptualize something more complex and porous. In this class we will examine the leaky boundaries between the office and the world, geographies internal and external, patient’s and therapist’s histories. Our temporary house will be propped up on three pillars: theory, clinical material, discussion. The theoretical presentation will draw on the work of Winnicott, Bion, the Barangers, Rey, Davoine & Gaudillere, Grinberg & Grinberg, Amati-Mehler, Ahktar, and Moss. The goal of this exploration is to create frameworks and perspectives, as well as ways of listening and intervening, that facilitate the emergence and working through of the cultural dimension in therapy. Extensive case presentation will provide anchoring for the theoretical material and act as a springboard for our discussions.

Francisco J. González, M.D. is Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at UCSF and previously Medical Director at Instituto Familiar de la Raza, where he directed Calmecac, a cultural training program. He has written and taught on questions of culture, homosexuality, HIV, film and gender. He is currently a candidate at PINC and maintains a private practice in San Francisco.

Continuing Education Credit
These courses meet the requirements for CE credits for MFTs and LCSWs (BBS Provider Number: PCE508).

CE credits will be given to psychologists through Division 39 upon completion of the course. (The number of CE credits is equal to the number of hours listed for each course.) Division 39 is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Division 39 maintains responsibility for the program and its content. In order to receive CE credit for any course held over multiple weeks, 80% attendance is required at any given course segment. For some courses, attendance at all sessions may be required for CE credit. See www.ncspp.org for expanded course summaries and updated course information.
