Program Overview In the past decade there has been a sharp increase in the numbers of children being raised by lesbian and gay parents, and this is particular true in the SF Bay Area. Psychotherapists working with lesbians and gay men are increasingly seeing patients who have or are interested in having children and many child therapists are now treating kids with lesbian and gay parents. Although the research has consistently shown that children of lesbian and gay parents fare as well as children from heterosexual parents, many of these children and their families face significant stressors. In this course we will review the current research on lesbian and gay families with an eye towards understanding the findings from a psychoanalytic perspective. We will explore the unique challenges faced by gay men and lesbians who choose parenthood, as well as the developmental and psychological experiences of children raised by same-sex parents, with a particular focus on Oedipal dynamics and gender development. Cultural/ethnic variables will also be addressed. Program Objectives Participants will have a better appreciation of the complexity and challenges for same-sex couples choosing to have children. They will be able to discuss the psychological impact of forming a lesbian/gay family within a heteronormative culture. Participants will be able to discuss the psychological development of children with lesbian/gay parents from a psychodynamic perspective, and demonstrate understanding of Oedipal and gender development. Participants will be able to describe and discuss clinical issues in the treatment of children with lesbian or gay parents. Gary Grosman, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst in San Francisco who has been teaching about gay and lesbian development for 25 years. As Chair of the Gay/Lesbian Issues committee of the American Psychoanalytic Association from 2001-2006, Dr. Grossman spearheaded the Association’s Position Statement supporting same-sex parenting. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor, Department of Psychiatry, UCSF, on the faculty of Access Institute, and member and faculty of SFPI&S. Amy Gentile, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Oakland and Pleasanton/Dublin since 1990. Dr. Gentile works extensively with Lesbians and Gay men involving parenting and relationship issues. She is adjunct faculty at Alliant University/CSPP and is a clinical supervisor and consultant for mental health professionals.
