One of my tasks as the new NCSPP president was to attend a meeting with the leaders of several of the major psychoanalytic institutions in the Bay Area to discuss collaboration and competition among us. Representatives from NCSPP, the Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California and the San Francisco Psychoanalytic Institute and its Society met over dinner. We discussed working together to more effectively provide innovative educational programs and reach out to broader communities with our offerings.

This group effort is very much in line with the NCSPP vision and is informed by our belief that the future of the analytic endeavor in Northern California will be stimulated by shared purpose, dialogue, and congenial interaction among the many psychoanalytically oriented organizations. We've reached out to include other institutes such as the C.G. Jung Institute of San Francisco, the Lacanian School of Psychoanalysis, the San Francisco Society for Lacanian Studies, and Access Institute.

Additionally, we want to help psychoanalysis cast as wide a net as possible and to bring together the various strands of the community. We believe that psychoanalysis has much to offer the world, and that it's enriching to extend ourselves into other arenas — the arts, community mental health, politics, and students in other social sciences.

These ideas are reiterated in the aim of IMPULSE as we move into 2006. We envision it as an integrative source for local news, events, and thinking for the psychoanalytically inclined. We want your suggestions for strengthening IMPULSE as a resource and welcome your participation. Please join our efforts to strengthen the Northern California psychoanalytic community by becoming a member of NCSPPtoday.
