Piece of Mind
THE PSYCHOANALYTIC INSTITUTE OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA PRESENTS:
Becoming Aware of Feelings: Integration of Cognitive-Developmental, Neuroscientific, and Psychoanalytic Perspectives - A video lecture by David Garfield, MD and Richard Lane, MD, Ph.D.
Discussants: Barbara Cohen, Psy.D. and Maggie Zellner, Ph.D.
Presenter: Sheila Longerbeam, MFT
Drs. Lane and Garfield discuss levels of emotional awareness - from the unconscious autonomic and sensorimotor levels (dominant in somatization) to the highest level of multi-dimensional conscious experience. They show how helping patients experience and mentally represent unconscious emotion leads to an increase in the structural complexity of their emotional responses, and to a decrease in somatic symptoms. Our discussions will focus on the clinical implications of their work.
