WELCOME TO IMPULSE, THE ELECTRONIC MONTHLY NEWSLETTER BY NCSPP

We hope that you enjoy this month's issue, and we hope you'll join NCSPP or contribute to our scholarship fund to assist us in fostering a vibrant psychoanalytic community in Northern California.

PRESIDENT'S REMARKS: MELISSA HOLUB, PH.D.

IMPULSE was launched five years ago with a particular vision. In addition to sharing relevant NCSPP news, we wanted to put into action NCSPP’s ability to offer an umbrella to the psychoanalytically interested community in the Bay Area. Our monthly Appointment Book column is the first community-wide calendar of its kind. As part of our umbrella function, I am dedicating this President’s Report to a snippet of news from each of three programs in the local analytic community. I may be able to provide information about other programs in future issues of IMPULSE. If your analytically oriented grad school, institute, or training program is interested, please contact me for some basic publishing guidelines.

Access Institute has been selected as the new institutional home for the psychoanalytic research tool, The Scales of Psychological Capacities (SPC) developed by Robert Wallerstein and colleagues. Access Institute will be in charge of training researchers in the use of the measure, and we hope to begin use of the SPC to research our patients’ outcomes in psychoanalytic therapy. Access Institute will be honoring Robert and Judith Wallerstein for their contributions to psychoanalysis at our annual event in October.

California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC) is expanding its Couples Therapy Program, with senior clinicians providing excellent training and supervision in this area. CPMC has openings for couples now and provides services on a sliding scale (down to $33.00 per session). For details, click here.

PINC (Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California) celebrates its 20th Anniversary this year and became a full component Society of the International Psychoanalytic Association (IPA) at the Association's Congress this July. PINC is one of seven independent institutes in the United States that are component members of the IPA. Five PINC candidates and about fifteen PINC analysts presented papers at the Congress.

Congratulations to Access and PINC for their achievements! I am looking forward to hearing from other analytically oriented programs. Over time, we’d like to make a permanent place in Impulse for such community updates.

Warm regards,

Melissa Holub, Ph.D.
NCSPP President

FROM THE EDITOR: CLEOPATRA VICTORIA, MFT

Divorced Eggs, Separated by Red and Green Sauce

Huevos Divorciado. That’s what the menu said in the Mexico City Airport. It sounded like malo suerte to me -- bad luck -- so I ordered the omelet de casa. We’d spent four days in the timeless town of Tepotzlan, an hour south of the city. Cobblestone streets ran up and down hills through the impoverished market centro and spilled out into the verdant, mountainous countryside. Miles of expansive, hidden estates lay in wait behind fortified stone walls and medieval gates, doused in fluorescent pink and purple bougainvillea..

There were Mexican prices and turista prices. How long would a foreigner need to live in the country to earn the right to pay local prices? Our bed and breakfast was in the countryside, a green patch bracketed by severe cliffs. We ate breakfast by the pool, served by a 40 year-old Mexican man, supporting three young children. How much was he paid, ministering to the rich visitors who might order the $55 rack of lamb or $100 bottle of wine listed on the menu? Not us, modest therapists, who shopped the outdoor market in the city center and made homemade guac from scratch in our room, to the ire of our innkeepers.

One night, very late, hungry and a bit restless, we hobbled over cobblestone in darkness towards town. We found a large outdoor restaurant, a blaze of trees and shrubs covered by an enormous canvas canopy, stone tables sunk in sand. The night air was soft and still. It was after-hours. We ordered pizza and cocktails. There was an impromptu stage up front, and a DJ and his friends were spinning tunes off his Mac --- trance, electronica. The Smiths' 1986 “There Is a Light that Never Goes Out” came on, and we got up to dance, excited and a bit homesick. The DJ smiled. I smiled back. I called out, “Buena musica. Lo quiero. Gracias!” It was the best I could do to bridge the separation.

PIECE OF MIND:

PINC REFERRAL SERVICE

The Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California (PINC) trains licensed and experienced mental health professionals to become psychoanalysts.

Psychoanalysis is an intensive psychotherapy conducted as a collaboration between patient and therapist in which patients are usually seen three to four times a week, for fifty-minute sessions. As part of our ongoing training program, PINC candidates may offer psychoanalysis throughout the Bay Area at a reduced fee to those unable to afford higher private practice rates.

Individuals who wish to consider the benefits of psychoanalysis with one of our candidates are invited to call PINC at (415) 922-4050 to begin a consultation process.

For more information about PINC or our referral service, please visit our Website, www.pincsf.org.
