WELCOME TO IMPULSE, THE ELECTRONIC MONTHLY NEWSLETTER BY NCSPP

We hope that you enjoy this month's issue, and we hope you'll join NCSPP or contribute to our scholarship fund to assist us in fostering a vibrant psychoanalytic community in Northern California.

PRESIDENT'S REMARKS: DREW TILLOTSON, PSY.D.

Okay, that does it. Yesterday, I was in a grocery checkout line and looked over to see Sarah Palin on the cover of Newsweek with a hunting gun slung over her shoulder. At first, I thought it was a spoof and had to look closely to see that it was actually Newsweek. I felt dissociative. Do I really live in this country? Then, I became outraged. I live in utter dismay this month. We are hemorrhaging and in need of thoughtful leadership with insight and vision. This presidential campaign has been difficult to follow. It seems Americans ride the waves of a desperate hope for change fueled by naiveté or rationalization/dissociation/denial. I am drawn into watching Larry King Live, Anderson Cooper 360, and for relief, Bill Maher’s Real Time to check the pulse of commentators. New rule: no stepping into a voting booth until you can prove you have a mind of your own. I am upset by media reports and polls and puzzled to hear callers sounding off on NPR’s Talk of the Nation. I fear I live in a country where people actually do not give serious thought to choosing leaders. I find it surrealistic that men and women are not thinkers but followers, and some are willing to be led by religion and some sense that Washington is somehow looking out for us as people. I am anxious about the November election and advocate for all of us to do what we can to help people think about their choices. Forgive my indulgence, but someone who hunts caribou and wolves from a helicopter for sport seems more appropriate for a Ridley Scott film about some fictitious futuristic nation than a possible President of my country.

Warm regards,

Drew Tillotson, Psy.D.

Green Your Psychoanalysis

Conserve your energy; lie on the couch. Recycle your patients’ projective identifications. Beta into alpha is Bion’s version of compost. Go organic; free associate. Use solar energy and schedule sessions during daylight. Consider fueling manic episodes with biodiesel or ethanol. Think of the environmental impact of your patients’ shouting or your shouting in your analyst’s office. Walk, bike, skate or take MUNI to sessions, remaining secure in your analytic identity even if clutching a bus transfer or a skateboard. Recycle your ghosts and turn them into ancestors.

Be mindful of toxic runoff of psychotropic medications into the Bay. Zero emissions are a good thing, but don’t waste the analytic hour in silence. Save trees by eliminating paper checks and paying or taking fees in cash. (Full disclosure: After reading Argentinean analyst, Horacio Etchegoyan, mention the 'French way' of paying for analysis in cash, I presented my analyst with a very large wad of green bills at the end of the month, which he promptly refused.) Think of reverie as the power saver feature. If unanalyzed, consider your carbon footprint on others around you to be ... well, Bigfoot. The half-life of transference is twice that of plutonium. You, your patient and the entire treatment constitute an ecosystem. As analytic therapists, we all drill for fossil fuel.

Your analyst is not a renewable resource. You only have one life. Use it wisely. You only have one analyst. Or two. Well, maybe three. Remember, Freud described the unconscious as something only glimpsed as if a shadow on the wall cast by a lamp. Last one to terminate, please turn off the lights.

PIECE OF MIND:
Psychoanalytic Couples Therapy Leora Benioff, Ph.D., member BACPPG*

NCSPP and BACPPG* are presenting ‘The Macbeths in the Consulting Room: Proleptic Imagination and the Couple, A Day with James Fisher.’

Shakespeare, the shared couple unconscious, literary theory and post-Kleinian ideas will be inter-woven during this unique event. Acclaimed London couples' therapist, James Fisher, will talk about the destructive marriage of the Macbeths, and what it tells us about certain states of mind embedded in couples. We will view film clips from a powerful RSC production of Macbeth, followed by a thought-provoking paper by James Fisher and a discussion by Shelley Nathans. Our focus on couples will continue in the afternoon with Dr. Fisher discussing a couple case presentation by Julie Friend.

Saturday October 18th, 9 to 4, CPMC, Enright Room.

Registration & Information

Dr. Fisher is also available for individual consultations Friday, October 17th (contact lbenioff@sbcglobal.net).

*BACPPG, the Bay Area Psychoanalytic Couple Psychotherapy Group, is dedicated to the study, teaching, and practice of psychoanalytic couple psychotherapy.

EVENT SPOTLIGHT:
Great Works: Literature and Poetry for Clinicians

"The great contribution Freud has made to our understanding of literature does not arise from what he says about literature itself but from what he says about the nature of the human mind: he showed us that poetry is indigenous to the very constitution of the mind." (Lionel Trilling)

While students of literature are routinely trained in the use of psychoanalytic theory to enhance their understanding of texts, training opportunities for clinicians to mine the enormous potential of great literature to enrich their clinical work are rare. NCSPP is offering such an opportunity in ‘Great Works: Literature and Poetry for Clinicians’, with literature professor and psychoanalyst Michael Zimmerman. Only a few days remain to sign on for this learning adventure. Discover what Plath, Lowell, Frost, Melville, Faulkner, Conrad and Hemingway can teach us about language, narrative and the human condition.

Class begins October 6th. See www.ncspp.org for more details!
