WELCOME TO IMPULSE, AN ELECTRONIC MONTHLY NEWSLETTER BY NCSPP

We're proud to note that this issue marks the first anniversary of IMPULSE. Little more than one year ago, the notion of an electronic newsletter connecting the diverse members of Northern Calfornia's psychoanalytic community was just a twinkle in the eye of NCSPP leaders. We hope that a year of reading IMPULSE has been as lively and eye-opening for you as creating it has been for us. We appreciate your support in making a success of this newsletter, and we continue to welcome your ideas for refinement and innovation.

Following up on last month's issue, we're pleased to say that the registration deadline for the East Bay and San Francisco Intensive Study Groups is September 8, giving you one more week to sign up. Also, we'd like to take a moment to acknowledge the Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California (PINC), NCSPP's dedicated and valued partner in creating the Intensive Study Groups. It is exactly this type of community-minded collaboration that NCSPP and IMPULSE were founded to foster and we're grateful for PINC's partnership.

We hope you enjoy this month's issue, and we hope you'll join NCSPP to assist us in fostering a vibrant psychoanalytic community in Northern California.

PRESIDENT'S REMARKS: BETH STEINBERG, PH.D.

An important aspect of NCSPP's current mission is continuing to bring psychoanalysis into the world and reach out to other disciplines. On Saturday, October 28, NCSPP will present a program titled Unveiled: Shame, Identity, Gender and Iranian Cinema, the latest in the "Out of the Tower/Off of the Couch" series organized by the Interdisciplinary Education Committee. In keeping with the goal of the committee and the series, this event will bring together academia, contemporary film, cross-cultural exploration and psychoanalysis in a fresh and penetrating forum.

Seeing and being seen are among the most universal of human experiences. But what internal and external motives may prompt us to avert our gaze or hide our faces? These and other questions pertaining to personal, cultural and political dimensions of seeing will be considered at this program. Featuring discussions by Professor Joan Copjec (SUNY-Buffalo), Professor Negar Mottahedeh (Duke) and Dr. Mali Mann (SFPI), and including a screening of Abbas Kiarostami's film "Ten" (2002), this conference aims to consider shame and gender in clinical, cinematic and cultural contexts, with particular reference to contemporary Iran and the Iranian diaspora community. Just as importantly, we aim to test the viability of discourse among psychoanalysts, therapists, academics and members of outreach communities, especially in a time of international controversy when the always-present risk of caricature or cultural appropriation of "the other" is at its greatest.

I invite you hope all to join us for what promises to be a lively, informative and provocative presentation.

Unveiled: Shame, Identity, Gender and Iranian Cinema
Saturday, October 28, 2006, 9 am - 5 pm
Berkeley Art Museum Theater, 2621 Durant Avenue, Berkeley

CANDIDATE'S BLOG

The term "blog" refers to a web-based journal wherein individuals offer up their personal experiences to anyone with a web browser. The editors IMPULSE seek out local analytic candidates willing to "blog" their experience in training. Our guest blogger, returning from last month, is finishing a residency in psychiatry and is a second year candidate at a psychoanalytic training institute. This piece, "Unrequited Hate," takes up the complex issues of transference and countertransference.

"Damn it!" I slam the lid of my laptop down. I watch the smoky vapors recede into the background. I am done with my process notes.

I think about my favorite, most analytic patient.

"I can't believe I was such an idiot!" I think. Why did I miss the last appointment with her? Why did I schedule her for a day the building would be closed? Why did I miss her calling me incompetent in session? I remember her words and frustration wells in my mind as I recollect my own words. These are the wrong words! These are the words to point out her inadequacy, her failed memory and her vulnerability. Why am I doing this?

I get up from my laptop and go to the grocery store. Then at the checkout:

"You're milk is leaking, sir. Would you like another one?"

"No, thanks, that's okay." Why was my voice so angry?

I'm jolted into reverie. I remember hallucinating my analyst in the place of my patient while I sat with her. I remember telling my analyst today, "I hate you. I hate you for all the feelings you bring up. I hate you for not being everything I wish you to be!"

I shiver. Hate. The words ring again in my mind. Idiot! Incompetent! The feelings feel like they are going to engulf me.

Now I lie in bed finally. I imagine railing relentlessly against my analyst with words and then her being nothing but lovingly analytic. The hate wells. I feel the minutes pass by. Suddenly, an intense feeling of warmth overtakes me. I find myself letting go and falling into a deep, quiet sleep.
