WELCOME TO IMPULSE, AN ELECTRONIC MONTHLY NEWSLETTER BY NCSPP

One of my tasks as the new NCSPP president was to attend a meeting with the leaders of several of the major psychoanalytic institutions in the Bay Area to discuss collaboration and competition among us. Representatives from NCSPP, the Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California and the San Francisco Psychoanalytic Institute and its Society met over dinner. We discussed working together to more effectively provide innovative educational programs and reach out to broader communities with our offerings.
This group effort is very much in line with the NCSPP vision and is informed by our belief that the future of the analytic endeavor in Northern California will be stimulated by shared purpose, dialogue, and congenial interaction among the many psychoanalytically oriented organizations. We've reached out to include other institutes such as the C.G. Jung Institute of San Francisco, the Lacanian School of Psychoanalysis, the San Francisco Society for Lacanian Studies, and Access Institute.
Additionally, we want to help psychoanalysis cast as wide a net as possible and to bring together the various strands of the community. We believe that psychoanalysis has much to offer the world, and that it's enriching to extend ourselves into other arenas the arts, community mental health, politics, and students in other social sciences.
These ideas are reiterated in the aim of IMPULSE as we move into 2006. We envision it as an integrative source for local news, events, and thinking for the psychoanalytically inclined. We want your suggestions for strengthening IMPULSE as a resource and welcome your participation. Please join our efforts to strengthen the Northern California psychoanalytic community by becoming a member of NCSPP today.
Beth Steinberg, Ph.D.
President, NCSPP

PIECE OF MIND: TERRANCE MCLARNAN, MFT, CENTER FOR HEALTHY DEVELOPMENT

The Center for Healthy Development (CHD) is a non-profit counseling agency that has provided long-term and low-fee psychotherapy in Santa Clara for more than 20 years while serving as a training facility for masters level interns who provide individual, couple, family and group therapy.
It is the mission of CHD to provide treatment to the segment of the local population who could not otherwise afford long-term treatment. CHD treats approximately 60-75 individual patients and holds 7 groups a week. CHD works closely with the Department of Family and Children's Services when children have been exposed to domestic violence and also with Family Court Services to assist children and their families when children have been impacted by highly conflicted custody disputes.
In the past several years, CHD has made a greater commitment to using the community-based model of the Tavistock Clinic. In this spirit, we wish to work more collaboratively with other psychoanalytic Bay Area organizations who work with similar populations. We invite such organizations to use our facilities to host classes, scientific meetings, or other events to promote analytic thinking in the South Bay.
Terrance McLarnan, MFT
Executive Director
The Center for Healthy Development

This space is available for psychological organizations in Northern California who want to articulate their relationship to the local psychoanalytic community. Please see our submission guidelines to express interest in contributing.

SEEKING A CONTRIBUTOR TO A NEW FEATURE: CANDIDATE'S BLOG

IMPULSE seeks a current candidate in psychoanalytic training to write a monthly series of short "blog" pieces tracking and reflecting on the process of training to be an analyst. We envision something very brief and informal that would provide a window for IMPULSE readers into the experience of an analytic candidate. The column could feature your byline or be anonymous, depending on your preference.
Email Cleopatra Victoria, MFT at psychoanalysis@medscape.com for further information.
