WELCOME TO IMPULSE, AN ELECTRONIC MONTHLY NEWSLETTER BY NCSPP

Last month's natural and man-made disasters were a kind of clarion call that awakened in many of us a heartfelt responsiveness to those in need. We at IMPULSE took the opportunity to remember those in our own backyards: Berkeley High School, the San Francisco Housing and Urban Health Clinics, and the Children's Psychotherapy Project. This month I want to call attention to the needs within our own community: those individuals still in training, those recently licensed and struggling to establish a practice, or those who work in community mental health settings. Many of these practitioners are unable to afford the rich diversity of courses offered by the psychoanalytic community.
A couple of years ago NCSPP established a scholarship fund to subsidize the fees for this group of practitioners. The program has been very successful and requests totaling about $3000 have been made in the past year alone by a wide variety of applicants. The program is funded exclusively through contributions from the membership. I will pledge $100 this month to the scholarship fund. I hope you will join me by making a contribution of $25, $50, or $100 to help us make NCSPP's offerings widely available. To make a donation, contact us via our online form. We sincerely appreciate your generosity.
Finally, we hope you'll support our efforts to strengthen collaboration in the Northern California psychoanalytic community by becoming a member of NCSPP today.
Francisco J. Gonzalez, M.D.
President, NCSPP

PIECE OF MIND: JEFFREY SWANGER, PH.D., THE C.G. JUNG INSTITUTE

The James Whitney Clinic of the C.G. Jung Institute of San Francisco has been providing low-fee depth psychotherapy since the 1940s. The clinic welcomes people of all ethnic backgrounds and sexual orientations. Between 60 and 70 patients are seen at any given time. Therapy in many cases can be open ended, as analysts, candidates and interns are all involved in providing treatment. In addition, patients can be seen at frequencies greater than once weekly. Therapy is also available for couples.
Jungian therapy is unique in its focus upon complex theory and symbolic work with a view to the archetypal layer of the psyche. Contemporary Jungian work is also informed by a variety of psychoanalytic approaches. The British Jungians, through their close collaboration with Kleinians, have demonstrated the natural compatibility of a Jungian approach with a developmental perspective and Object Relations theory. Jungian therapy includes close attention to transference and countertransference. In addition, Jung, in discussing the idea that therapist and patient have a mutual impact upon each other, advanced the idea of intersubjectivity, a perspective that is very present in Jungian work.
The clinic is organized around a two-year predoctoral training program for psychology interns. Currently there are nine interns, including two international students from Poland and Hungary. Interns receive intensive supervision from three supervisors simultaneously, while providing an average of 12 clinical hours. They participate in case conferences and didactic seminars and have access to the many resources of the Jung Institute. Training involves an experience of the integration of the above diverse perspectives with the ultimate goal of the development of an individual style and the emergence of an analytic attitude. The C.G. Jung Institute of San Francisco is proud to bring the richness of the Jungian approach both to our patients and to the greater psychoanalytic community.

POTENTIAL SPACE: A POEM BY SCOTT LINES, PH.D.

The following poem was composed on the occasion of "The Geography of Trauma," NCSPP's San Francisco Introductory Event for 2005.
History's Rich Harvest

for Francoise Davoine and Jean-Max Gaudilliere

Every day the frozen tide yields more bodies.
The disappeared pile up, sand
embedded in their simian creases
numbers written on nameless arms with indelible ink.
Bones bleach in the sun.
Clouds the color of bruises
clutter the open view
a clatter of car horns in the street.
Or the outline is there but the body has vanished
the lens dropped from the camera
recording nothing
words fallen from the tongue
signifying nothing.
The ancestors, taken away
leave only ghosts in the time of no trust.
What was the season, do you know?
What was the color of flowers in their blooming?
If you can transform us, do it now
before drugged time freezes the tears of statues
before the only presence is absence.
It is time to rest.
Put us to rest.
- Scott Lines, Ph.D., 2005 September 24
